May. 8th, 2006 08:19 amI was working last night for Wally World. I was on the door trying to say a friendly hello to people who were either surprised by it or wanted nothing to do with being friendly.
All of a sudden, I look up and there is this huge, yellow butterfly (at least three times the size of a normal monarch butterfly). It flew over to the windows above the entrance and tried desperately to get outside. The life span of a butterfly is short and I watched for 20 minutes as this butterfly looked for ways out of that window before slowing down and eventually giving up. I watched as it laid down slowly, facing the window, seeing the birds and blue sky. I watched it's wings slowly stop fluttering. Eventually all you saw were the ocassional antannae twitch. I couldn't believe that I actually watched a life give up and become resigned to its fate.
It was upsetting last night and thinking about it now, it's still upsetting. I could cry for that butterfly. I could cry because I watched a vibrant, beautiful creature go through a process that I've seen myself in, but never from an outside perspective.
(And before you ask, No, I couldn't have saved it. It was too high)
If the lifespan of this butterfly is 2 weeks, how long was that 20 minutes for it?
