Holy Crap! Genealogy research is expensive! If you don't want to pay for it, you are depending on the research of others and well.. God Knows they're 100% correct in theirs.

So much information I want to find out and so hard when you can't/won't pay a membership price that's more than your car payment.

Oi

Well ... its a lot of work ... membership price? What are you referring to? Don't you have others in your family that have done *some* work already? ... they have geneology socities in the area ...

I keep meaning to join but I never have time ... I've traced my roots (or others have) pretty far back ... I just keep meaning to compile all the information ...

I don't know if your family is from the area or not, but the lady that runs this http://www.acadiangenexch.com/pub.htm has done a TON of research over the years .... I think she's my either second cousin or second cousin once removed ... i forget ...

anway, her publications have helped me a ton and her research goes far beyond her own family. At the very least, it should give you a hint as to where to start ....

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure if it will help at all because the one french name I do have in the family may have been changed at some point in time.

The membership I was referring to is all the differet websites that are out there. You can search and search but to get to the good/historical documents you must be a member of the service. Genealogy.com/Ancestry.com/Genopro even charges if you want to use the family tree generator for more than 2 weeks. It's just annoying. The memberships are outrageous.

And no, no one has done any real research on my family. That's why I'm trying to do it now. Before the ones that are left are gone, I want to get as much of it recorded as possible. Unfortunately, there aren't many left and the ones that are around all remember things differently.

I'm at work so i'm not sure if these are charge or not but they seem to not be at first glance ....

http://www.lagenweb.org/

http://www.cyndislist.com/la.htm

The bluebonnet library in baton rouge has a substantial geneological section as well ... http://www.clickers.org/genealogy/index6.html

and then there's this which includes some information for new orleans as well ... though, i'm not sure how up to date it is.... http://www.vivelacajun.com/Genealogy%20Research/la-libraries.htm

Don't give up, there are lots of resources out there ... you just may have to dig a bit harder to find the freeish ones :)

and of course ... a search for "Free Genealogy" on google came back with tons of resources :)
