Persecution to the Nth
Oct. 17th, 2007 12:02 pmThis was posted in another journal and I felt the need to respond to it.
California Dreamin'
What I don't understand is why, even in conservative households, people don't want their children exposed to diversity. If your beliefs fall under certain guidelines, and if you are doing a good job teaching your children your values, then no matter what/who they come into contact with they will have those values with them, no? Homosexuality is not contagious. Their children will not become their worst nightmares just because they are exposed to them.
On the other side of this, I don't think that this law is a good thing. Pulling the far extreme of what is right or wrong to prove a point is only going to make things difficult in the long run. This being a free country should dictate that we are *free* to practice what kinds of lifestyles we enjoy *without* taking away from the lifestyles of others.
When is enough enough in situations like this? We need to change the Pledge of Allegiance that has been in place for so long and stands as a symbol of what this country was founded on just because of the world -God-? I'm about as anti-organized-religion as they get and I don't agree with this. When I was in school and it was required for us to stand up, every morning, face that flag and show respect for that flag and our country, those who had religious or moral restrictions against this practice were allowed to sit out. Why should that not be the case now?
Even the idea that "mom" and "dad" should be removed from classroom settings by a law is imposing a law that infringes upon the basic rights of so-called "normal" marriage institutions. I am in favor of same-sex marriages. I believe that it shouldn't matter what your sexual orientation is, if you are willing to settle into a permanent, long-term relationship with another person, you should be allowed to. It's our basic right as a human being. But this situation in California is basically like abolishing marriage altogether just for conservatives and fundy's to prove a point that same-sex marriages should not be allowed. This is just in the opposite extreme.
Another example is that right now most of the white population in this country, particularly in largely black populated areas, are not comfortable saying what they think, feel or believe in most situations because they can feel someone else waiting to make a judgment call about their racial tolerance. Why should I not be allowed to comment on the attitudes of the majority of black men in this country, compared to 30-40 years ago, being lazy and degenerative and reversing forward-thinking? Am I wrong to say that because I'm white? Should I have to keep my opinion to myself just because I'm not part of a race who, just two generations ago, fought with so much passion to win the respect of the white majority in the US and are now back-paddling in the wrong direction because the youngest generation of today is feeled like they are "owed" something?
Yes, this land is your land. You have rights, as a human being, that should be acknowledged and respected and tolerated. This fact, however, does not entitle you to disallow the rest of the free world to express opinions, views, practices and beliefs because this land is my land too. My personal beliefs usually fall on the side of the libertarian ideals, but the difference is that I'm not going out and telling other people they are WRONG for how they live their lives because that's not what it's about. People need to wake up and realize that they're idiots. I'm not being hypocritical. If they want to be closed-minded and blind to the rest of the world outside of their bubble, that is THEIR RIGHT. They just need to stop jumping into mine.

One day, our children will look back in wide wonder that we had to put a law on the books that said non-whites are human and should be treated thusly. As far as they will be concerned, it's as obvious that the world is round and the solar system is heliocentric.
There is no take over, this is not an invasion, only a moving of borders where the skirmishes happen. The small battle in the larger war that is establishing the individual worth of ever sentient being.
